Hunting Sable in South Africa

Sable antelope are among the most sought-after species for international hunters visiting Africa. Their impressive horns, striking black-and-white facial markings, and muscular build make them a true highlight in any trophy collection.

Sable bulls are typically found in wooded savannah and thick bush, often near water sources. While they can be seen grazing in open areas during the day, sable tend to retreat into denser vegetation when disturbed, requiring patience and careful tracking.

When to hunt

Sable can be hunted throughout the season, but June to September is usually best, when their coats are dark and the bush is more open.

Hunting style

Most sable hunts are done by walk-and-stalk, often involving long glassing sessions followed by careful approaches. They’re not aggressive but can become dangerous when wounded, so shot placement is critical.

Good to know

  • Only mature bulls develop the deep black coat; younger bulls may still appear reddish-brown.

  • Horns can grow over 40 inches, with heavy bases and elegant backward sweep.

  • Sable are one of the top choices for hunters looking for a premium plains game trophy.
