Hunting Kudu in South Africa

Plains Game Hunting

Often referred to as the “grey ghost,” the kudu is one of South Africa’s most iconic and sought-after plains game species. Their spiral horns and alert nature make them a favourite for many hunters visiting Africa for the first time — and a challenge for seasoned hunters too.

Kudu prefer thick bushveld and wooded areas, using their excellent camouflage and hearing to stay hidden. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, which is when most hunts take place.

Kudu can be hunted throughout the season, but April to August is typically best, when the vegetation is thinner and bulls are more active during the rut.

Hunting style

Kudu are generally hunted by walk-and-stalk or from elevated blinds. Spotting a mature bull in the thick bush and getting into position without being detected requires patience and experience — but that’s what makes kudu hunting so rewarding.

Good to know

  • Only bulls carry horns, and they can grow to over 50 inches in length.

  • Kudu meat is among the most popular game meats in South Africa.
