Hunting Gemsbuck in South Africa
Gemsbuck, also known as Oryx, are striking antelopes known for their long, straight horns and bold markings. Originally from the arid Kalahari region, they’ve been successfully introduced into parts of Limpopo and the Free State, where they’ve adapted well to bushveld and semi-open terrain.
These antelopes are tough, with a reputation for being able to cover long distances and survive in harsh conditions. This makes them a challenging and rewarding species to hunt. While they can be hunted year-round, the cooler months between April and September are ideal.
Hunting style
Gemsbuck are typically hunted by spot and stalk. They are often found in open areas, where their keen eyesight and wariness make for an exciting pursuit. A well-placed shot is important, as they are known for being especially hardy.
Good to know
-
Gemsbuck bulls and cows both carry horns, and cow horns are often longer but thinner.
-
