Hunting Eland in South Africa

The Eland is Africa’s largest antelope and a true symbol of strength and grace. Despite their size, these animals are surprisingly agile and can be a challenging and rewarding quarry for any hunter. Mature bulls can weigh over 900kg (2,000 lbs), yet remain elusive in the thick bush and open plains they call home.

In South Africa, Eland are hunted in both bushveld and more open savannah terrain. Their keen senses and cautious nature make for a fair chase experience. You’ll often track them on foot with your PH, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons when they’re most active. Eland are known to jump fences and cover great distances when pressured — making a well-planned stalk essential.

Best time to hunt

Eland can be hunted year-round, but the cooler months between April and September provide ideal conditions, especially in Limpopo. Their coats grow darker and thicker in winter, with mature bulls developing the characteristic large dewlap and spiral horns that make for a stunning trophy.

Did you know?

  • Despite their size, Eland can jump over 2 metres high from a standstill.

  • Bulls often have a clicking sound when walking – caused by their tendons – which helps alert other animals to their presence.
