Hunting Common Duiker

Duikers are small, shy antelopes known for their secretive habits and quick, darting movements; their name comes from the Afrikaans word for "diver." At Phumba Safaris, Common Duiker can be found across bushveld concessions, often in the edges of thickets or near open clearings.

Typically solitary and crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk), Duikers rely on cover and speed rather than distance to escape danger. They’re hunted by walk-and-stalk or opportunistically during other hunts. Their size, skittish behaviour, and preference for cover make them a challenging and satisfying addition to any plains game safari.

Best time to hunt:
May to October, when thinner vegetation makes them easier to spot in the bush.

Did you know?
Duikers are one of the few antelopes that will occasionally eat meat — they’ve been known to scavenge carrion or eat insects, making them unique among antelope species.
