Hunting Bushbuck in South Africa

Bushbuck are a highly elusive and solitary species, often found in dense riverine bush and thickets. At Phumba Safaris, Bushbuck are typically hunted along the banks of the Lipopo River.

These antelopes are water-dependent and most active in the early morning and late afternoon. Their solitary nature and preference for thick bush make them a challenging target, requiring quiet movement and sharp observation. Though not large, they are alert and will disappear quickly if spooked.

Best time to hunt:
Cooler, dry months (May to September), when cover is reduced and water sources concentrate movement.

Bushbuck are one of the few antelope species that don't form herds. Mature rams are highly territorial and can become aggressive when threatened — they’re known to charge when wounded.
