Hunting Buffalo in South Africa

One of Africa’s most iconic dangerous game species, the Cape Buffalo is known for its power, resilience, and unpredictability. At Phumba Safaris, Cape Buffalo are hunted in the bushveld on well-managed concessions with naturally reproducing herds.

Buffalo hunting requires patience, precision, and a calm approach. These animals tend to group in small bachelor herds or larger breeding herds and are most often tracked on foot. They are extremely tough animals and can be aggressive when wounded, making them a challenging and rewarding hunt for experienced hunters.

May to October is the best time to hunt buffalo, when vegetation is thinner and tracking is easier. However, you can read about a record hunt we had in December where the thick vegetation ensured an "exciting" experience.

Did you know?
Despite their bulk, Cape Buffalo are surprisingly silent when moving through thick bush. Their hearing and sense of smell are highly developed, and they’re capable of covering ground quickly when threatened.
